Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD): A Leading Cause of Vision Loss

There are two main types of AMD: dry AMD and wet AMD. Dry AMD is the more common form of the disease. It is characterized by the gradual breakdown of the macula. Wet AMD is less common, but it is more serious. It is caused by abnormal blood vessels that grow in the macula and leak fluid.

The exact cause of AMD is unknown, but it is believed to be a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Risk factors for AMD include:

  • Age: AMD is more common in people over the age of 60.
  • Family history: People who have a family history of AMD are at an increased risk of developing the disease.
  • Race: AMD is more common in people of European descent.
  • Smoking: Smoking is a major risk factor for AMD.
  • High blood pressure: High blood pressure is a risk factor for AMD.
  • High cholesterol: High cholesterol is a risk factor for AMD.
  • Obesity: Obesity is a risk factor for AMD.
  • Sun exposure: Excessive sun exposure is a risk factor for AMD.

There is no cure for AMD, but there are treatments that can help to slow the progression of the disease and preserve vision. Treatment for AMD depends on the type of AMD you have and how severe it is.

Treatments for dry AMD include:

  • Nutritional supplements: Nutritional supplements, such as lutein and zeaxanthin, may help to slow the progression of dry AMD.
  • Laser therapy: Laser therapy may be used to destroy abnormal blood vessels in the macula.

Treatments for wet AMD include:

  • Injections: Injections of anti-VEGF drugs may help to slow the growth of abnormal blood vessels in the macula.
  • Laser therapy: Laser therapy may be used to destroy abnormal blood vessels in the macula.

If you have any concerns about AMD, it is important to see an eye doctor. Early diagnosis and treatment are important for preserving vision.
